Arriving at Bonanza after the creek was fully staked, Hunker and Johnson had moved on in search of Henderson, prospecting as they went. They had found gold -- 25 to 50 cents of gold per pan -- on another tributary of the Klondike. Hunker staked a discovery-claim and called the creek Hunker Creek. They then proceeded to Henderson's camp, only to find that they had staked on the same creek Henderson was working.
One story says that Hunker and Henderson settled the matter with the flip of a coin. According to another story, Henderson ceded the discovery to Hunker because his find was much richer. Whatever the truth, Hunker registered a discovery claim on what proved to be one of the richest creeks in the Klondike.
